The McCallum Family in Springfield, Northeast Tasmania, are one of Australia’s few Amish families. The more I read about them, I feel they are like the New Order Amish or the Beachy Amish Mennonites, in the sense that although they live off the grid, they are very friendly to their neighbourhood and the public. They also play musical instruments (where most Amish do not).

“When you learn something from people, or from a culture, you accept it as a gift, and it is your lifelong commitment to preserve it and build on it.” — Yo-Yo Ma A moving story of the handover of a family treasure, to an Amish family who will cherish and play a violin, brought to the Springfield district of north east Tasmania, by the Heazlewood family in the pioneering days of Scottsdale. They follow the 4 core values of the Amish culture: faith, family, community and simple life. This family have inspired me to learn from them. The first blog post I did on them was an introduction, the second blog post was about their community life where they bought the St Paul’s Sunday School.

Psalm 33 vs 2 to 5 2Praise the LORD with melodies on the lyre; make music for him on the ten-stringed harp. 3Sing a new song of praise to him; play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy. 4For the word of the LORD holds true, and we can trust everything he does. 5He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the LORD fills the earth. This blog post about the Heazlewood Violin Story – where the Heazlewood family gave the violin to the Amish Family and mainly about the McCallum family as musicians. I will give my thoughts at the end of the article and video.

Bonnie Heazlewood donates the Heazlewood family violin to an Amish family(Supplied: Dorset Tasmania History Society) [PHOTO SOURCE: https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/hobart-your-afternoon/family-heirloom-donated/13751210] You may have read the story in the North Eastern Advertiser this week of the 'Springfield violin'. Dating from between 1850 and 1900 the violin was owned and played by Stuart Heazlewood from Springfield, particularly in the Heazlewood Orchestra around the 1920s and 30s. When Stuart died in the 1970s his daughter Bonnie inherited the instrument and preserved and treasured it, though mostly unplayed. Bonnie recently wondered what to do with her father's old violin - she wanted it to be in Springfield and to be played, so with the help of a luthier (builder and repairer of stringed instruments) from Longford, the McCallum family from Springfield, and the History Society, the violin has been restored to a beautiful standard and Bonnie has gifted it to the McCallum family with a covenant that asks that it always remain in Springfield and always be played. Bonnie recently handed over the violin to Mary McCallum, who the family has decided will be the current keeper of the violin, at a very moving ceremony in Springfield. |
In a small church hall in north east Tasmania, a violin that had been handed down generations of one family has been donated to another family for many more lifetimes of play.
In the 1970s Bonnie Heazlewood became the owner of her fathers violin. She held onto the violin and has recently had the instrument restored. No small job considering the instrument had years of travel, play and some less than ideal repairs. The family treasure now plays beautifully and has been donated to an Amish family who live just across the road from where the violin spent many years of its playing life.

MY THOUGHTS:
I appreciate and I am grateful for the McCallum Family for preserving the violin from the Heazlewood family. As Cellist, Joshua Roman said:

The McCallum Family are a very talented family musical group, as the mother, Bethany is a music teacher and she trains her children well. I enjoy listening to them, whether it is singing or playing their musical instrument. As Maria Von Trapp said:

They are similar to the ‘Mel’ Stoltzfus Family Musical Group, where they have a large family and the whole family are musically talented. The McCallums usually performed during the Christmas season in Scottsdale, Tasmania. I personally recommend that they should perform in the Shenandoah Christian Music Camp and the Anabaptist Orchestra Camp.

Love Is Work Working together with others is the best way to test our faith, to find out whether or not we are ready to live a life of Christian fellowship. Work is the crucial test of faith because such a life can come into being only where people work for love. Love demands action, and the only really valid action is work. Friendship arises out of mere companionship when two or more of the companions discover that they have in common some insight or interest or even taste which the others do not share and which, till that moment, each believed to be his own unique treasure (or burden). The typical expression of opening friendship would be something like, “What? You too? I thought I was the only one.” —C. S. Lewis, The Four Loves
