MEET GLORIA YODER THE NEW ORDER AMISH COOK

17 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.

18 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters,
and that spreadeth out her roots by the river,
and shall not see when heat cometh,
but her leaf shall be green;
and shall not be careful in the year of drought,
neither shall cease from yielding fruit. – Jeremiah 17 verse 7 to 8 (KJV)

I heard from ex-Amish people that some Amish people do not know whether they are saved by Jesus Christ or not. I notice that most ex-Amish are from the Swartzentruber Amish sect (one of the most extreme Amish subgroup), I understand why they left and they do have my empathy and sympathy, as some were abused themselves. I do have love for Ex-Amish people.

I only hope that they do not paint a broad brush of all Amish people by saying that all Amish are unsaved. Those who are Ex-Amish do emphasize that they agree that they are not painting a broad brush of all Amish. There are also many Amish who give their testimonies that they are believers in Jesus Christ.

If you see some converts to Amish like the McCallums, Mark Curtis, Titus Morris and Matthew Secich, they are sincere believers in Christ and do not hide their love for God. For example, Paul Yoder, an old order Amish who owns a lumber mill in Mio, Michigan, believes that Jesus Christ saved him from all his sins and he believes in the sanctification of the Lord. The Amish Singing Couple, Ben and Rose, do not hide their faith by singing for the Lord.

In this blog post, I will introduce Gloria Yoder from Flat Rock, Illinois, a New Order Amish mother of six children, who follows the Amish 4 core values: faith, family, community and simple living. She is a cook who writes columns (see her links below). Please follow her if you love cooking.

Sadly, her husband, Daniel passed away in 2022, I will post one of the bible verses, Daniel gave in a devotion in memory of him:

17 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.

18 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters,
and that spreadeth out her roots by the river,
and shall not see when heat cometh,

Gloria Yoder: Why Am I Amish?

By Erik Wesner June 30, 2021

Gloria Yoder writes an introspective Amish Cook column this week, on why she is Amish. As she often does, Gloria first notes that there are many different types of Amish people and that she can only speak for her community (Gloria belongs to a New Order Amish church). She then explains:

Of the thousands of denominations out there, there is no other I’d rather spend community living with than those around me, but still, the knot within remains. I love my family, enjoy my church friends, and consider them my brothers and sisters. We enjoy our pony and the countless drives we’ve enjoyed on perfect evenings as wisps of hair from the children on my lap blow back into my face. Yes, I honestly love being Amish; still, in the depth of my heart, there is something much deeper than the title “Amish” which has been given to us. This is what I’m feeling: without Jesus, it would be nothing. Do you know how much nothing is? I’m referring to zero. So, even with a blessed heritage, if it wouldn’t be for the blood of Jesus, our lifestyle would be no good. I love the Lord. I love Him with my whole heart. Without Him, I would be lost, like totally helpless. Yet honestly, I face times when I begin to focus on responsibilities and forget how safe and loved I am by the one who gave His life so that I can live in the freedom of heart. Like Daniel always says, “His provision will not do a thing for us until we claim it.” Praise God, as I bow in His presence in repentance and receive His gift of absolute provision, my sights are cleared; I again get up and love life because He loves me.

In all this, God has sent many dear friends, including many of you who are not Amish, who have been such a blessing to us. No matter what church you do or don’t go to, you matter. As you seek the Lord and pour your hearts into studying the Scriptures, you’ll be blessed more than you’ll ever know.

So back to the Amish lifestyle, we have chosen it, not because it’s the only way to live, but we value its practical applications to various principles of the Bible.

15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. – I Timothy 1:15-16 (ESV)

I think Gloria is saying a couple of things here. For one, she clearly loves aspects of Amish living – the relationships and community, the “Amish” things like horse-drawn travel. But more importantly two, Gloria is emphasizing that it is really about Jesus, more than the lifestyle or other aspects of the Amish. The Amish part is about applying the Bible to life, and she judges it a good way to do so.

Would you get different answers to the question if you asked Amish in other churches? The New Order Amish have a reputation for being particularly “spiritually-minded” for lack of a better term. Criticism of the Amish by, for example, some ex-Amish people, often includes claims that Amish place their faith in getting to heaven in their lifestyle, or something thereabouts. There may be some who believe in that way, but I’ve known many Amish who are “spiritually-minded” beyond the lifestyle (and who see themselves as Christians first) in non-New Order churches.

Finally, similar to other New Order people I’ve known, Gloria is customarily welcoming. She adds towards the end “By the way, if you’re in the area, drop in, we’d love to chat, and maybe even have an old-fashioned pony ride together!” I’ve often wondered how many visitors she gets.

5 Things I Like About Being Amish, According To Amish Cook Gloria Yoder

By Erik Wesner August 30, 2018

Gloria Yoder is an Amish mother from Illinois who writes the Amish Cook column (previously penned by Lovina Eicher). Gloria was recently asked by a reader “What five things do you enjoy the most about the Amish way of life?”, and in this week’s column, she answers.

Gloria starts with a couple of important disclaimers:

First, I will insert that there really are more different types of Amish that I could count and not all Amish are alike. Second, just because I have come to love our culture, I do not view it better than all others. May you all be blessed as you seek God where He calls you.

On the “different types of Amish” point, Gloria herself is a member of a New Order Amish church. Her second point is something I have heard expressed by Amish in various forms on many occasions, reflecting a customary humility.

What does 1 Samuel 2:21 mean?

"And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD." - 1 Samuel 2:21

1 Samuel 2:21 - "And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD."

The verse 1 Samuel 2:21 in the King James Version of the Bible states, "And the Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the Lord." This verse comes from a larger passage that tells the story of Hannah, a woman who was barren and greatly distressed because she was unable to conceive a child. She prayed fervently to the Lord, and her prayers were answered when she gave birth to a son, Samuel.

The context of this verse is set in the time of the Judges, a tumultuous period in Israel's history. Hannah's story takes place in the town of Ramathaim-Zophim, where she is one of two wives of a man named Elkanah. The other wife, Peninnah, had children, which caused Hannah great anguish. However, despite her pain and longing for a child, she continued to pray to the Lord and express her faithfulness.

In this verse, we see the fulfillment of the Lord's promise to Hannah. After years of anguish and prayer, the Lord "visited" her, which can be understood as God showing favor and granting her the desires of her heart. This visitation resulted in Hannah conceiving and bearing five children, three sons, and two daughters. This demonstrates the abundant blessings that the Lord can bestow upon those who are faithful and seek Him with all their hearts.

The verse also highlights the growth of Samuel, who would go on to become a significant figure in Israel's history. It is noteworthy that the child Samuel is described as growing "before the Lord." This suggests that he was being raised in a manner that was pleasing to God, and that he was being prepared for a special purpose in the service of the Lord.

The themes present in 1 Samuel 2:21 include the faithfulness of God, the power of prayer, and the fulfillment of promises. Hannah's story is a testament to the fact that God hears the cries of His people and is able to intervene in their lives in miraculous ways. It also emphasizes the importance of remaining faithful and steadfast, even in the face of great hardship and despair.

Symbolically, Hannah's story can be seen as a representation of the hope and restoration that God can bring into the lives of those who trust in Him. The fact that Hannah's barrenness was reversed and that she was blessed with five children serves as a powerful symbol of God's ability to bring new life and abundance where there was once emptiness and lack.

Furthermore, the birth of Samuel holds great significance as he becomes a powerful prophet, priest, and judge in Israel, playing a crucial role in the transition from the period of the Judges to the establishment of the monarchy under King Saul and King David. As such, Samuel's growth "before the Lord" can be seen as a symbol of his dedication and commitment to serving God, as well as the divine guidance and protection that he would receive throughout his life.

In conclusion, 1 Samuel 2:21 is a verse that holds deep meaning and significance within the larger narrative of the Bible. It serves as a powerful testament to the faithfulness of God, the transformative power of prayer, and the fulfillment of His promises. The story of Hannah and Samuel continues to inspire and encourage believers to trust in God's timing and to remain steadfast in their faith, knowing that He is able to bring new life and blessings beyond measure.

The Black Forest house (German: Schwarzwaldhaus) is a byre-dwelling that is found mainly in the central and southern parts of the Black Forest in southwestern Germany. It is characterised externally by a long hipped or half-hipped roof that descends to the height of the ground floor. This type of dwelling is suited to the conditions of the Black Forest: hillside locations, broad tracks, high levels of snowfall and heavy wind loading. Individual farms, such as the Hierahof near Kappel, which are still worked today, are over 400 years old. The Black Forest house is described by Dickinson as very characteristic of the Swabian farmstead type. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Forest_house

Hannah's Children: The Women Quietly Defying the Birth Dearth Hardcover – 19 March 2024

by Catherine Pakaluk (Author)

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars (147)

See all formats and editions

A portrait of America's most interesting yet overlooked women.

In the midst of a historic "birth dearth," why do some 5 percent of American women choose to defy the demographic norm by bearing five or more children? Hannah's Children is a compelling portrait of these overlooked but fascinating mothers who, like the biblical Hannah, see their children as their purpose, their contribution, and their greatest blessing.

The social scientist Catherine Pakaluk, herself the mother of eight, traveled across the United States and interviewed fifty-five college-educated women who were raising five or more children. Through open-ended questions, she sought to understand who these women are, why and when they chose to have a large family, and what this choice means for them, their families, and the nation.

Hannah's Children is more than interesting stories of extraordinary women. It presents information that is urgently relevant for the future of American prosperity. Many countries have experimented with aggressively pro-natalist public policies, and all of them have failed. Pakaluk finds that the quantitative methods to which the social sciences limit themselves overlook important questions of meaning and identity in their inquiries into fertility rates. Her book is a pathbreaking foray into questions of purpose, religion, transcendence, healing, and growth--questions that ought to inform economic inquiry in the future.
