A barn raising, also historically called a raising bee or rearing in the U.K., is a collective action of a community, in which a barn for one of the members is built or rebuilt collectively by members of the community. Barn raising was particularly common in 18th- and 19th-century rural North America. A barn was a necessary structure for any farmer, for example for storage of cereals and hay and keeping of animals. Yet a barn was also a large and costly structure, the assembly of which required more labor than a typical family could provide. Barn raising addressed the need by enlisting members of the community, unpaid, to assist in the building of their neighbors' barns. Because each member could ask others for help, reciprocation could eventually reasonably be presumed for each participant if the need were to arise.

The tradition of "barn raising" continues, more or less unchanged, in some Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities, particularly in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and some rural parts of Canada. The practice continues outside of these religious communities, albeit less frequently than in the 19th century. Most frames today are raised using a crane and small crew.

I love the Amish Four Core Values: Faith, Family, Community and Simple Living. Even the other Anabaptist Groups like Mennonites and Hutterites also follow it. I name it the Four Core Values of the Anabaptist Trio. I dedicate this blog post to my family and friends.

 BLOG: https://blackforestproject421.blogspot.com/2023/04/the-four-core-values-of-anabaptist.html

Take the late Bruderhof Founder, Eberhard Arnold for example - although he might not be an Amish, but through his writings and sermons, he followed the Four Core Values: Faith, Family, Community and Simple Living.

The Anabaptist Trio – Amish, Mennonites and Hutterites are like the Germans, Austrians and Swiss. These are 3 different countries but all of them speak the German language. There are similarities and differences of the Anabaptist Trio but they all follow the Four Core Values.

I will post about the Amish Four Core Values from https://www.amishvillage.com/, before writing about how the Mennonites and Hutterites follow the four core values. I will post bible verses and photos of different Anabaptist trio (as each photos represent a core value). I will give my thoughts on the four core values on another blog post.

The core Amish values are to lead a simple life of faith. The Amish believe that their religious faith and the way they choose to live are interdependent. These core beliefs lead to a very strong set of values of faith, family, community, and a simple unworldly life. In this blog post, we will explore these four core values of the Amish lifestyle.

15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. – I Timothy 1:15-16 (ESV)

Faith

Faith is the cornerstone of Amish life. Religious customs are endowed with the values of humility and simplicity and putting God and community ahead of the individual. Their religious beliefs call them to live a life of faith, discipline, dedication, and humility. Amish attend church every other Sunday in a church members’ home. The service acts as a renewal of faith and an affirmation of community. The Amish community governs itself strictly and baptized members are morally committed to church rules. For them, life is a spiritual activity, and they demonstrate their religious beliefs daily through their own actions of discipleship, plainness, nonresistance, forgiveness, and non-violence.

A Family that Work Together, Grows Together. – Amish proverb

Family

Family is the heart of the community and is a very important social unit in the Amish culture. Amish place great value on time spent together as a family and their connection with each other. They run family businesses together, eat meals together, attend church services, barn-raisings, and other community events together. It’s not unusual for an Amish family to have seven to ten children. You’ll often see young children helping at market stands, picking corn, or tending to animals. Amish families approach life as a unit and children learn a strong work ethic from the very beginning.

The dedication to family continues with older family members. Wisdom from older Amish is valued by the young and often multiple generations live together to either help care for aging family members and/or help with the rearing of children. These large multi-generational family units contribute to the strength and growth of the extended family and ultimately to their community.

Why Mennonites have large families?

“There are two explanatory factors: one is large families, and the second is high retention rates,” said Professor Steven Nolt, Director and Senior Scholar at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College. “If you looked at the 1930s, up through about 2000, the retention rate had actually increased. There’s a case study that showed that the retention rate went from the upper 70 percent to 90 percent,” he said.

Invited To Amish Dinner 🇺🇸

Peter Santenello

Sep 5, 2021 HOLMES COUNTY

Quite often the Amish and Mennonite are misunderstood or a mystery to most of us outsiders. Join me in an enlightening conversation as we talk about relationships, the use of technology, what they fear, and how they see the rest of America. A truly eye-opening experience.

Hello Everyone! I just want to clarify that this is one group of Amish out of many. Their opinions and views on life are theirs and do not represent all Amish people. Most of this group are Beachy Amish and Marcus (the older man) is New-Order Amish. Beachy Amish are the most liberal Amish with the most amount of modernity in their lives. This is why I was able to record this conversation. When we "English" (all people that aren't Amish) say "Amish" we categorize many different types of Amish into one group and this is why this can get so confusing.

For example, the Beachy Amish can have cars and electricity in their homes. The Schwartzentruber Amish are the Amish who chose to live away from modernity completely (without cars, phones, etc.) and are quite often the Amish we think of when we think of the Amish.

Here is an oversimplified list of different types of Amish I met while in Holmes County, Ohio:

-SWARTZENTRUBER AMISH (the most conservative and most removed from the modern world)

-DAN AMISH (somewhat removed from everybody else, conservative)

-OLD-ORDER AMISH (can't drive vehicles but some of them can ride as passengers, only have steel wheels on their carriages, not rubber. Allow Rumspringer--their youth to explore the world and "try things out").

-NEW-ORDER AMISH (Broke away from the Old Order Amish. Less conservative than Old Order, but more conservative in the sense that they don't promote Rumspringer, they use rubber on their carriage wheels, use more modern sliding doors on their carriages, some have phones.

-BEACHY AMISH (The most accepting of the modern world and the closest to the most conservative Mennonites. This is the group in the video)

There are many other sects and to confuse things even more each sect has different rules depending on their church.

None of the Amish are easy to open up like this on camera and it's only because of Josh that we got in with this beautiful group of people. In the next few weeks, I'll have a video inside a Schwartzentruber's home. They agreed to let me film as long as I didn't show their faces. It was a surreal experience, to say the least. I will also have some videos for you with Old-Order Amish people.

I hope you enjoy this series! Like most things in life, there's much more beneath the surface with a lot of complexity mixed in. I hope you find as much joy in discovering the Amish as I have. See you next Sunday!

Its a fun night at the annual softball game between two sister companies. AirWorks against AW Machinery,. Both companies are situated along US Rt. 250 east of Applecreek Ohio. It's a perfect evening so far here at the Kidron Ohio ballpark. The companies provided delicious supper and desert for employees and their families. Bragging rights for an entire year goes to the winner of two out of three games. I'm rooting for AW Machinery. Fun times. JD

Community

The spirit of the Amish lifestyle is exhibited through their strong sense of dedication and love for their church communities. They believe that community is at the heart of their life and faith and that the way to salvation is to live as a loving community separate from the world.

Since the Amish separate themselves from the rest of society, their communities are a unique support system. Community members will freely give of their time and their skills to help one another. A good example of community support is an Amish barn raising. The community comes together to help a family build a barn. The effort often involves several men who build the barn, as well as many women who feed the workers. These barns are a steadfast reminder of Amish tradition, community, and craft coming together to work as one.

Whether it’s raising a barn, offering wisdom to fellow community members, consoling a family that is suffering a loss, or providing financial assistance, the members of the community support each other. Dependence on the church community is very strong, and church members are urged to help each other in everyday life and in times of difficulty or disaster.

When Brothers Dwell in Unity

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when brothers dwell in unity![a]

It is like the precious oil on the head,
    running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on the collar of his robes!

It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,
    life forevermore.

10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. - Philippians 4 verse 10-13 (ESV)

Simplicity

The most obvious trait of the Amish community is that they choose to lead a simple life. But the reason they do this is because they believe simplicity is a symbol of humility. They take seriously the Biblical commands to separate themselves from worldly things.

Often the first thing that identifies the Amish is the way they dress. Amish fashion styles are simple, practical, and modest. Clothing is generally made at home using plain fabrics. Their choice of clothing shows their commitment to the principles of the Amish church – to live simply.

Despite the many advancements in our society, the Amish do not typically utilize modern or worldly things like electricity, technology, vehicles, and other modern conveniences that many of us depend on for our daily lives. They believe worldliness can keep them from being close to God which could present influences that may be destructive to their communities and their way of life. By living simply and restricting access to unnecessary items, such as fancy clothes, TV, or iPhones, the Amish feel they can keep the modern world from intruding into their lives and allow them to remain focused on their faith and family.

By following the four principle values of faith, family, community, and living a simple and modest life, the Amish live out their own religious beliefs and lead a unique life in their own spiritual way. For an authentic look at Amish culture, check out our various tour options.

I will explain how each of the Mennonites and Hutterites follow each of the Four Core Values, there are similarities and differences. Just a disclaimer here, Mennonites here include both the Conservative Mennonites and the Beachy Amish Mennonites, while Hutterites include those from the Hutterite Colony and those who live in the Bruderhof.

Faith:

Mennonites and Hutterites do affirm the Apostles’ Creed. Unlike the Amish, Mennonites do have church building or they meet in a meeting hall. The Hutterites have their church services on their own colony or at the Bruderhof.

Kingdom Fellowship Weekend is an annual gathering, typically held the last weekend of August in south-central Pennsylvania. It serves as a forum for Biblical edification focusing on spiritual renewal, fervent prayer, and absolute surrender to our King, Jesus. We are committed to a Christian expression that is Christ-centered, Scripture-anchored, and kingdom-focused, specifically as modeled by the Anabaptist tradition.

These Americans Are Stuck in the 1800s (Mennonites)

Drew Binsky

Jan 20, 2024

Have you heard of the Mennonites? They are an offshoot of the Amish (a sub-sect of Christianity that originates in Switzerland in the 1800s). Today, the Mennonites live in small communities around the Midwest, USA, as well as in Belize, Bolivia and other countries in Latin America. What's fascianting is that they live a completely isolated life without the use of internet, TV or music -- something that is almost impossible to comprehend in today's society. Thanks to my friends Zach and Janki, I was able to get secret access into a Mennonite community in northern Wisconsin, where I was able to learn about their bizarre way of life. I was even invited into one of their homes for a meal, and it was an out-of-body experience, to say the least!

Community:

The Anabaptist Trio are all very community oriented. Some Amish Community have been more open to singing and playing musical instruments, for a music community. Both Mennonites and Hutterites love to sing in choir or even play instrument at a music camp.

The Anabaptist Trio, the men and women are always together like a herd of elephants. They help one another in need or having a leisure together.

Hutterites live in community, that is they share all their possessions. All members living in one colony “own” the assets of that community collectively.  They work for each other and they don’t pay wages to their members. However, in lieu of wages all necessities of life are provided. So each member serves the other through their works and labour and all proceeds are shared.

The Hebrew phrase for "children are a joy" is "ילדים הם שמחה" (yeldim hem simcha). "ילדים" (yeldim) means "children", and "שמחה" (simcha) means "joy" or "gladness". Israel is the only OECD countries that have the highest fertility rate of 2.91 per woman.

From September 2023 to September 2024, about 183,000 babies were born in Israel, meaning that more than 400 babies were born per day. There was a similar case in 2022, in its annual Amish population study, the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College estimates that 1,450 Amish babies were born in Lancaster County last year. Only 145 Amish of all ages died. That population increase of 1,305 brought the total number of Amish living here to 44,315. There were more Amish births than deaths in that state.
