We must obey God and defy tyrants! The apostles gave us the example in Scripture - Acts 5:29 "But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men."" The image itself is very symbolic. The crown represents a Tyrant who does not obey God's law and is spiritually dead as symbolized by the skull. The sword piercing the skull represents the Sword of the Spirit. What can defeat Tyrants? The Gospel message and He who is the Truth. When a king disobeys God's law and therefore acts unjustly, he must be called back. But if they refuse to harken to wisdom and continue to violate God's law and their role laid out in Romans 13, they must be defied.

Romans 13 DOES NOT Teach Unlimited Obedience to the State

Given the condition of our current government and nation, many Christians are thinking about what their response should be to unjust government rule. A common song - "We are always to obey the government" - is being sung by many ministers. They base their teaching on Romans 13.

This short sermon gives three convincing proofs that Romans 13 does not teach that we are to give unlimited obedience to the State. The three convincing proofs are:

1. No where does Romans 13 state that we are to give unlimited obedience to the State, rather men impose such thoughts upon the text.

2. Proper hermeneutics forbids such a conclusion – that we are to have unlimited obedience to the State – because there are many passages where the people of God disobey the State, and are commended by God for doing it.

3. Romans 13 contains conditional clauses which make it clear that our obedience to the State is not to be unlimited.

The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates provides the best means to rein in a higher authority that has abused its authority and spurned its limitations. The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates is rooted in Scripture and found throughout the history of mankind. The Doctrine offers great hope to a nation of people who groan under the yoke of tyrannical behavior by the State.

The Lesser Magistrate Doctrine declares that when the superior or higher ranking civil authority makes unjust or immoral laws, policies, or court opinions - the lower or lesser ranking civil authority has both the God-given right and duty to interpose and refuse obedience to that superior authority. If necessary, the lesser authorities may even actively resist the higher authority.
