Tujaeng 투쟁 – KCTU Rally for labour reform

Like the Bundschuh movement, Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) unite together to end union repression and advocate labour reforms. Just like the German Peasants of the 1500s, the South Korean construction workers have lost trust on their government and protest against the injustices they had faced.

Do not forget Yang Hoe-dong, who self-immolated in protest against labour repression.

A labor union official who set himself on fire outside a court in the eastern coastal city of Gangneung earlier this week died during treatment at a hospital in Seoul on Tuesday, police said.

The official, a ranking member of the Gangwon Province chapter of a nationwide construction workers' union, attempted self-immolation Monday hours before attending a pretrial detention hearing in Gangneung, 163 km east of Seoul, on charges of business obstruction.

The 50-year-old official, identified only by his surname Yang, was airlifted to a Seoul hospital but died at 1:09 p.m., police said.

The local prosecution earlier requested arrest warrants for Yang and two other union officials on suspicion of forcing the hiring of union members and extorting about 80 million won ($59,700) from construction companies between April 2022 and Feb. this year. (Yonhap)

KCTU Rally in Seoul Demands End to Union Repression and Labor Reform

SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) organized a rally on Wednesday at 4 p.m. along Sejong-daero in Seoul, with the participation of over 20,000 union members.

During the rally, the union voiced criticism against the government and police, demanding an end to union repression and labor reform. They also called for an apology from the government regarding the death of Yang Hoe-dong, who tragically self-immolated in protest against labor repression. Additionally, the union advocated for amendments to Articles 2-3 of the Trade Union Act.

Prior to joining the rally on Sejong-daero, the construction and metalworkers’ unions held separate rallies and resolutions near the presidential office in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, and in front of the Seodaemun-gu police station, respectively. These events took place from 2 p.m. onwards.

Although there were no significant physical clashes or instances of capsaicin spraying by the police, the atmosphere at the rally remained tense throughout. Tensions escalated momentarily during a speech by the KCTU when the police repeatedly tested the microphone volume, cautioning against any interference with the legal assembly and demonstration.

Following the rally, attendees diligently cleaned up the area, resulting in a peaceful conclusion to today’s event without any major clashes with the police.

Yang was just one of over a dozen of union leaders facing trumped up charges under President Yoon's war on unions, which he has compared to "gangsters" and the "mob." Since Yang's death, construction workers have mobilized in the tens of thousands to demand an apology and an end to the Yoon government's anti-labor crackdown. The Real News reports from Seoul.
