The envelope system, also known as the envelope budgeting method, is a popular method for visualizing and maintaining a flexible budget. The key idea is to prioritize cash income to meet separate categories of household expenses in physically separate envelopes. I learn this budgeting method from Dave Ramsey and it helps me to divide my money and save effectively, it is very similar to the Japanese Home Ledger, Kakeibo (家計 簿). I strongly recommend it. I will post 3 articles on how to use it and quotes from Dave Ramsey and others.

How Envelope Budgeting Works
The envelope budgeting system divides your income into different spending categories—bills, groceries, gas, and so on. Once you've decided how much you should spend on each category, you'll take that amount in cash and place it into an envelope. Then, only spend what's available in that envelope for that category's bills or purchases. The aim is to prevent you from overspending by limiting what is available to spend.
Even if you no longer use cash to pay bills, the principle still works and can be applied using software or other financial technology.
The strength of envelope budgeting is that it forces you to stay in touch with spending habits because once the envelope is empty, you can't spend from that category until the next paycheck replenishes the envelope.

Step 1: Establish Categories and Limits
To use envelope budgeting, first establish spending categories for your budget, and then set spending limits for the categories.
Note
The total amount for the spending categories must not exceed your monthly income.
To understand what categories might be useful for your budget, consider where your money goes. Try to list your common expenditures so you can group them effectively. For example, your categories may include:
- Groceries
- Gas
- Health and grooming
- Clothing
- Dining out
- Household items
- Pet care
- Children's items
Tailor your categories to your specific situation. Make as many categories as you need, but not so many as to be overwhelming.
Don't forget to include irregular expenses, such as taxes, insurance, or gifts, and a savings category.
To discover what a reasonable monthly limit might be for each category, check your recent banking statements or receipts to get an idea of your usual costs. You can use that number or, if you're trying to cut back, use a slightly smaller figure.

Money is only a tool, not a goal. – Amish Proverb [PHOTO SOURCE: https://suzannewoodsfisher.com/amish/too-much-money/] |
Step 2: Label Each Envelope
Using one envelope per spending category, write the name of each category and the monthly budgeted amount on the envelopes.
If you are paid weekly or bimonthly, divide the total monthly amount for each category by the number of pay periods you have in each month, and record that figure on the envelope. That will help you put the right amount from each paycheck into the envelope.
Step 3: Separate Funds
For this example, suppose you receive a paycheck for $500. Cash your paycheck, and put the allocated amount for each budgeted category into the respective envelope. A simple example might be divided like so:
- $100 in the grocery budget envelope
- $200 in the rent budget envelope
- $70 in the gas and auto maintenance budget envelope
- $30 in the utility budget envelope
- $70 in the personal care and clothing envelope
- $30 in the savings budget envelope
Each time you are paid, add that check's earnings to each cash envelope according to your established budget.

Step 4: Spend from the Envelopes
When you go shopping or pay a bill, take the money for the payment from the appropriate envelope. If you are paying a bill in person, carry the envelope with you. Likewise, if you are going grocery shopping, bring your grocery envelope along with you.
Note
If you spend all of the money in one of your envelopes, do not pull cash from another envelope in order to continue spending. If you do, you'll be short for that category.
At the end of the month, if you have money left over in any of your envelopes, you can either keep it in that envelope for the next month's spending or remove it and add it to savings or your emergency fund. Budgeting that way can help you reach a savings goal, which in turn can help you keep your budget on track.
Envelope Budgeting With Financial Software
With direct deposit for paychecks, electronic funds transfer, debit cards, credit cards, and checks, cash envelope budgeting may seem obsolete. However, with personal finance or budgeting software that is built around envelope budgeting principles, you can use convenient financial transaction methods while still maintaining the discipline of envelope budgeting.
Envelope budgeting apps such as You Need a Budget uses virtual "envelopes" to represent budget categories and to show spending activity and balances for each category. When income is recorded, the software distributes a portion to each "envelope." When a purchase is made, you tell the software which spending categories to use, and the software deducts the money from the "envelopes."
Bills that are paid directly cause the software to remove the payment amount from the appropriate envelope. If you use a credit card as a payment method, the software can set aside that amount in a credit card payment "envelope" or category to be used when you pay the credit card bill.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How does the envelope system help with budgeting?
The traditional cash envelope budgeting system makes it easy to stick with a budget, because you can't spend anymore once a specific envelope is empty for the month. If you stick to it, that puts a hard limit on each spending category.
Are there downsides to a cash envelope budget?
The biggest downside of the cash envelope system is that it's out of sync with today's world. People use cash less and less, and carrying cash envelopes can be inconvenient or even unsafe. If you want the benefits and structure of an envelope system but don't want to carry cash, consider using an app such as YNAB or Mvelopes that allows you to imitate the system digitally.

How To Make The Envelope Method The Best Budgeting Method
Written by Choncé Maddox |
Modified date: Jun. 2, 2022
The envelope method of budgeting may seem a little outdated, but combining cash and credit cards into a hybrid method might just be the answer to your budget needs.
Feeling financially unstable often stems from being unable to properly manage your money.
If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to pay off debt, or just want to feel like you have more control over your money and what you spend it on, the first step is to get on a budget.
Budgeting can seem overwhelming at first, but it’s simply a spending plan for your money and should help you get organized and feel more at ease.
One of the best classic budgeting styles around is the envelope method. This method is great to help you avoid overspending because you literally break up your spending categories with different envelopes and place the necessary cash inside to cover your spending for the month.
Once all the cash in the envelope is gone, you won’t be able to spend any more money in that area.
You can also move money around by borrowing cash from another envelope. Let’s say you need an extra $15 for groceries. Perhaps you can take that money from your ‘entertainment’ budget category envelope.
While this method sounds flawless and easy enough to implement, it can become difficult to stick to if you’re not used to using only cash.
If you have automatic withdrawals set up for convenience, you can still use the basic principles surrounding this budgeting system.
Here’s how you can make the envelope method the best budgeting method for you.
What’s Ahead:
Summary
· Only take cash out for variable expenses
· Keep money in your account to cover digital payments
· Track debit and credit card spending with Mvelopes
· Summary
Only take cash out for variable expenses
The best way to go about using this method is to ease into it by attacking the main categories you tend to overspend in. Often times, that includes variable expenses like groceries, dining out, entertainment, fuel, household items, miscellaneous expenses, etc.
It’s so much easier to overspend in these categories since you already know how much your rent/mortgage, cell phone, and car payments will be.
Withdraw enough cash for these categories only, then place them in dedicated envelopes. Continue to spend and live as you normally would but realize that budgeting with cash and envelopes will most likely allow you to stay within budget.
It’s more difficult to go into debt if you’re just spending cash. According to this study, credit cards drive more impulse purchases because you don’t have to open your wallet and actually be honest about how much money you have to spend.

Keep money in your account to cover digital payments
If you have automatic bill pay set up or automatic savings contributions scheduled each month, it may do more harm than good to withdraw all your money and place it in envelopes all the time.
Some companies and creditors even prefer you pay your bills online in order to receive discounts and may even charge you a fee for mailing in a payment. For example, if you have student loans, your lender may provide an interest rate reduction just for setting up automatic monthly payments.
Since it may cause you more stress to mail out several different payments each month, keep some of your money in your checking account but continue to track it with the rest of your budget categories.
Be sure to keep track of which expenses you’ll monitor on your bank statement and which ones you’ll monitor with cash envelopes.

Track debit and credit card spending with Mvelopes
While the traditional envelope budgeting method does seem a little dated, the Mvelopes app allows you to use the same principle to break up your credit and debit card spending into virtual envelope categories.
It’s only four dollars per month to use the app’s basic features which allow you to manage and track your spending anytime, anywhere. You’ll start by easily syncing your credit, debit, and other financial accounts.
Then, you’ll create your budget categories so the app can track your spending and warn you before you overspend. When you spend with debit and credit cards, it’s easy to wonder where some of your money went at the end of the month.
Mvelopes eliminates much of that feeling by allowing you to assign a purpose to every dollar just like with the traditional envelope budgeting system, and you can still earn those credit card reward points and cash back you desire so much.
Mvelopes offers a 30-day free trial so you can try the app out and decide if it’s right for you.
Check out some other budgeting apps, if you don’t think Mvelopes is for you.

Summary
The envelope budgeting method can be a great way to help you regain control over your finances and tackle common financial obstacles like:
- Paying off more debt
- Freeing up enough money to save
- Avoiding overspending each month
It’s important to assess your needs and current situation to figure out which variant of this method will work best for you. If you favor cash, feel free to use physical envelopes for the bulk of your spending.
If you’re like most of us and spending all cash is not ideal, seek to create a hybrid method by tracking automatic withdrawals on your own or using the Mvelopes app to assist.

Dave Ramsey's Envelope System Explained
8 Min Read | Oct 25, 2022
By Rachel Cruze
Want to keep more of your hard-earned cash? Try keeping your money in cash envelopes.
Ramsey's cash envelope system is nothing new—it’s been around for decades. But some people still don’t know exactly how or why it works. Let me show you! (And if you hang with me until the end, I’ll tell you how to make using cash envelopes more fashionable than ever.)
What Is Dave Ramsey's Envelope System?
The envelope system is a way to track exactly how much money you have in each budget category for the month by keeping your cash tucked away in envelopes. At the end of the month, you can see how much cash is left by taking a quick peek in your envelope. How easy is that?
If you’re constantly going overboard in a certain category (hello, food!), then take cash out for the amount you’ve budgeted for and stick it in an envelope. When you shop for that category, only use what’s in your cash envelope. Once the money is gone, it’s gone—so this will force you to stop overspending and help you achieve your money goals faster.
How the Envelope System Works
One of the reasons we overspend is because there’s nothing telling us when to stop. That’s where your cash envelopes come in. They’re a great tool that will help you stick to your budget. Here’s how to use them:
1. Think of the budget categories that need a cash envelope.
It’s a good idea to use the envelope system for items that tend to bust your budget. Think of things like groceries, restaurants, entertainment, gas and clothing.
You get to decide which budget categories get an envelope, but here are a few I find most helpful:
- Groceries
- Restaurants
- Gas
- Medicine/pharmacy
- Hair care/makeup
- Car maintenance
- Personal
- Entertainment
- Gifts
2. Figure out your budget amount.
If you know you tend to overspend on things like baby showers, birthdays and impulse buys, then look at limiting that to a certain amount for the month. If groceries are always zapping your cash, figure out how much you want to spend on them and then stick to it.
Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page with the budget amounts. And if you’re single, recruit an accountability partner who is committed to holding you to your budget. This could be a friend, family member or coworker who you trust and know is on board with the money principles you’re putting into practice.
3. Create and fill cash envelopes for the budget categories.
Let’s say you’ve budgeted $500 a month for groceries. When you get your first paycheck of the month, take out $250 from your bank account and put the cash in an envelope. On that envelope, write out Groceries. When you get your second paycheck, do the same thing again and put that $250 in the envelope. That’s your $500 food budget for the month.
Make sure you take enough money with you to cover your groceries for that trip. If you take $150 cash and your total comes to $160, take some things out of the cart and put them back. I know, I know—it’s hard. But it’s better than going over on your grocery category and busting your whole budget for the month.
And on the flip side, if you don’t spend all of the money from the groceries envelope when you’re at the store, make sure you put any change you get back in the cash envelope.
No money—and I mean zero money—comes out of that groceries envelope except to pay for food at the grocery store. If you go food shopping and leave the envelope at home by mistake, turn your car back around.
4. Spend only what you’ve put in each cash envelope.
Don’t forget: When your money’s gone, it’s gone! If you want to go to the store but don’t have enough money, raid the fridge for leftovers. Do a pantry challenge. Dig through your pantry to see what you can find to make dinner without having to hit the grocery store. This is a great way to really get intentional about your spending habits.
Advantages to Using Cash Envelopes
- It keeps you on track.
- It enforces discipline.
- It holds you accountable.
- It makes it pretty hard to overspend.
Is the Envelope System the Same as Cash Stuffing?
If you’re on TikTok or Instagram, you might have seen a trend called cash stuffing. Cash stuffing is a process of splitting up your cash each month into envelopes assigned to a category of your budget. Does that sound familiar? Yep! Cash stuffing is the same thing as the envelope system. The term has just become popular because some people like to film their budgeting process and post it on social media.
But cash stuffing works the same way as the envelope system: At the beginning of the month, you cash out your paycheck and use the cash to fund each envelope. For example, if you’ve budgeted $35 toward your Beauty category, you’d stuff $35 in cash into that cash envelope. Pretty simple!
What If I Pay Some of My Expenses Online?
Here’s the thing with the envelope system: It works better when you’re actually physically walking into a store to make a purchase. Shopping at the grocery store, going out to eat, getting a haircut or oil change are all times when using the envelope system works really well.
You can still use cash envelopes for online purchases, but it does get a little trickier. Write the amount you’ve budgeted for on the outside of the envelope and don’t spend more online than the amount you’ve jotted down. Keep track of how much you’ve spent and write it on the back of the envelope, just like if you were balancing a checkbook.
What if I Run Out of Money in My Cash Envelope?
Be careful not to borrow from the other cash envelopes. When it comes to the envelope system, it can be really tempting to shuffle cash from one category to fund another.
Let’s say you used up all the money in your restaurants envelope—don’t be surprised if some inner voice tells you to grab your clothing envelope.
Remember, the whole purpose of using cash envelopes is to control your spending and help you stick to your budget.
If you run out of restaurant money, eat leftovers instead of going out. If you see your gas money slipping away faster than you planned, limit your trips or start carpooling to work. Find creative ways to make your money stretch when the envelopes are getting low.

What About Emergencies?
If you have a crisis come up in the middle of the month or something happens and you have absolutely no choice but to shift your cash envelopes around, call an emergency budget meeting to talk it through.
If you’re married, talk with your spouse and figure out the best course of action, adjust the budget, and agree on it together. Both of you must be involved—it’s a joint decision. Or if you’re single, run the amounts by your accountability partner to get their input.

What if I Have Money Left in My Cash Envelope at the End of the Month?
If you have money left in an envelope at the end of the month, congratulations! You came in under budget. That’s the best feeling in the world. And it’s okay to celebrate too . . . within reason.
Reward yourself by going out to dinner or grabbing a pumpkin spiced latte. Or roll the money over to next month so you have an extra-large food budget. Rewarding yourself is important because it helps keep you motivated. You have to celebrate those little wins along the way!
And if you’re in Baby Step 2, take that extra cash and put it toward your debt snowball. Every little bit helps.
Remember, cash envelopes are powerful weapons in the fight against overspending. They can help you manage your money better than you ever have. Put the Ramsey envelope system to work for you and get intentional about how you’re spending your money.

Whenever performance differences cause a major imbalance, rebalance your fortunes back to the four equal parts.” – Jakob Fugger
