Many people get confused when trying to distinguish the difference between a Mennonite person and an Amish person; it makes sense that they might be similar in many ways since the Amish come from the Mennonites, but what makes the two different?

It is hard to give an exact description of all the differences and similarities between the two religious groups seeing as the Amish fall into so many different categories and sects, but there are a few things that, in a general sense, distinguish Amish from Mennonites.

The main difference between the two lies in outward issues, such as dress and technology. Amish, as you know, tend to stay away from technology as much as possible and maintain a plainer, more conservative style of dress. Mennonites, on the other hand, will many times wear brighter colors with more variety. In addition, Mennonites are much more likely to be open to technology such as driving in cars, using a telephone and electricity in the home, etc.

Finally, while Amish live in their own separate, close-knit communities, most Mennonites blend in and live among normal communities. Some Mennonites even attend college and work in the "English" work force.

The list could continue depending on varying factors, but this gives you just a couple of ways to distinguish between Mennonites and the Amish.

From 16 to 20 September 2026, I was in Deloraine, Tasmania after visiting the McCallum Para-Amish family Farm. Apart from visiting the beautiful town, I went to visit the Western Tier Mennonite church community. I will explain more in this blog, before I give my thoughts.
