The Great Reformer, Martin Luther, would have been 542 years old on November 10, 2025. In memory of him, I will present this sermon by Rev Cornelis Kleyn on Lord’s Day 1 of the Heidelberg catechism. I had one of his sermons in a blog post: ‘SERMONS ON HEBREWS 10 VERSE 24 TO 25 – THE GOSPEL COMMUNITY’. I will put quotes by Martin Luther, John Calvin and John Owen in this blog post.
Without the gospel everything is useless and vain; without the gospel we
are not Christians; without the gospel all riches is poverty, all wisdom folly
before God; strength is weakness, and all the justice of man is under the
condemnation of God. But by the knowledge of the gospel we are made children of
God, brothers of Jesus Christ, fellow townsmen with the saints, citizens of the
Kingdom of Heaven, heirs of God with Jesus Christ, by whom the poor are made
rich, the weak strong, the fools wise, the sinner justified, the desolate
comforted, the doubting sure, and slaves free. It is the power of God for the

Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?
A. That I am not my own,1 but belong—body and soul, in life and
in death2—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.3
He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,4 and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.5 He also watches over me in such a way6 that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven;7 in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.8
Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life9 and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.10
