AMISH MUTUAL AID: AMISH HELPING TO REBUILD NORTH CAROLINA FOLLOWING HURRICANE HELENE

African Proverb: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

56 Amish workers are helping in Western North Carolina with victims of Helene. They are in search of a base camp close to Black Mountain. They are bringing their own supplies to build “Cabins for Christ”.

This is the America I love! People coming together from all walks of life and helping one another.

Amish builders from Pennsylvania recently constructed 12 tiny homes in Boone, North Carolina for families displaced by Hurricane Helene. The project, completed in under 48 hours, was entirely funded by the Amish community and cost over $300,000. The Amish also donated supplies like propane tanks and fire department equipment to the local community.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! - Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (ESV)

I will post this article about what the Amish did before giving my thoughts.

Group Of Amish Build 12 Tiny Houses For Hurricane Victims In 48 Hours

A group of more than five dozen Amish from Pennsylvania traveled to North Carolina to help with rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Helene.

Cleanup and recovery efforts are still underway three months after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Unprecedented rainfall, winds, and flooding displaced hundreds of families. Volunteers have been working to get those families in homes before winter weather causes further delays.

Recently, a group of more than 60 Amish traveled from Pennsylvania to Boone County, North Carolina, to serve those affected by the hurricane. According to the High Country Press (HCP), Andy Owens coordinated with the Amish to bring them to the area to build 12 sheds that would be used as tiny homes for victims.

Boone NC officials have confirmed that 62 members of the Pennsylvania Amish community have completed the construction of 12 tiny homes in Western North Carolina in under 48 hours.

The total cost of the project for was over $300,000, all of which was donated by the Amish community. Reported on X, aka Twitter.

How The Building Project Came About

Owens, who is no stranger to building projects due to his history with building base camps for Burning Man, was the point man for the group of Amish carpenters who traveled to North Carolina with their families and other volunteers. The group arrived on a Tuesday with five semi-trucks filled with everything they needed for the job.

The HCP reports that the group “brought and left behind 20 propane tanks, numerous tools, and five pallets of fire department supplies – hoses, axes, etc., which will be given first to Meat Camp Fire Department and distributed to others in the area.”

2000 members of the Pennsylvanian Amish community had been rebuilding Chimney Rock NC.

The Amish women and girls cooked and served food to the workers and handed out gifts, toys, and clothing items that they had brought along by the pallets full.

Less than 48 hours later, the Amish were on their way back to Pennsylvania and left 12 completed sheds, that had been donated by an Amish business, behind. The cost of the project was estimated to be $300,000 and was completely donated by the Amish community.

According to Spectrum News, the Amish were able to get the tiny homes 90% complete.

“They erected everything from the outside in, framed out the walls, framed out the roof, ran the electric,” Luc Henry, a local contractor, said.

I seen this story of Amish carpenters coming to help the people in North Carolina by building temporary housing for those who’s homes washed away in the floods. I’m not surprised by this as so many Amish and Mennonite families will go help in these disasters. They have the skill and determination to do good in these disasters and this work is kind of a mission for them. I’ve seen barns blown over by tornadoes and 200 Amish show up and put it back up in a week. We need more of this in America.

Letter from the CEO at Curbo Curbs:

Dear Friends of WNC and beyond,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the response from this simple request has been nothing short of amazing, in less than 24 hours all pieces of a very complex operation have gone into place like it was all supposed to happen.

We have secured a home base with portable showers, toilets, cooking and sleeping quarters close to Billy Grahams camp where the tiny homes are being built.

Here is a little background on how our relief operation works. (Similar to what the Amish Churches did after the Kentucky Tornado disasters)

1 or 2 full sized, 56 passenger bus load of volunteers will leave Lancaster Pennsylvania Sunday nights at 10 PM, Grab breakfast 7 AM Monday morning and be ready to build mini homes or help with storm cleanup by 9 AM Monday and available until 4 PM Fridays.

These groups are mostly 18-25 year old young people but are required to have a responsible parent for every 10 teenagers.

Daily schedule is usually very organized and predictable (As predictable as teenagers can be!) Morning singing and worship starts at 7 AM followed by hearty breakfast before everybody heads out for their daily assignments shortly after 8 AM.

The volunteers will stay will their assignments until dark or later if required followed by showers and another hearty evening meal around 5-6 PM prepared by the volunteer ladies back at base camp.

6-9 PM is reserved for a few games of volleyball or other social games before quiet time starts at 10 PM.

Each week's crew starts back to Lancaster PA around 4 AM Saturday morning.

I have had multiple requests from media and content creators regarding filming and doing a documentary... PLEASE ... Respect the Amish and their privacy..... Here are a few guidelines:

·         Most of these volunteers are giving their heart into this effort and want no part of standing in front of a camera "Bragging"

·         Do NOT ask for a group pose as most of them will object to this

·         Most of our volunteers are OK with having photos being taken from a distance while they working, especially the young people

·         If you are unsure, just ask!

·         At the end of the day, most of these volunteers just want to do their part, live their private life and pass all the honor to God and the Lord Jesus Christ

Our group has committed to only the following organizations and is only committing to the most critical needs in the Black Mountain and Swannanoa areas, The groups we have committed to for the next 3 months are www.Cabins4Christ.org , https://unitedcajunnavy.org/your-giving-matters/, & https://www.blackmountainhome.org/

Unfortunately there are lots of grifters that are scamming and profiteering off the Cajun Navy & Tiny Amish Home names.

Please, please, donate only to trusted & vetted organizations, these are the only 4 places our group has vetted and approved for monetary contributions so far:

Cabins for Christ, donations & home requests >> www.Cabins4Christ.org

United Cajun Navy, Critical air drops, access and long term recovery >> https://unitedcajunnavy.org/your-giving-matters/

Black Mountain Children's Home >> https://www.blackmountainhome.org/

If you or your business wants to make a $5,000.00 + tax-deductible contribution to the Amish Volunteer's traveling and meals expenses please call Chris at BJ's Raw Pet Food 717-945-4893 (No text), he is the current chairman for the Amish Church's non-profit, Great Needs Trust. Each volunteer coming down pays $150.00 per person to cover their own drivers, meals & lodging.

Thanks again to the people of North Carolina and beyond,

CurboCurbs.com has done lots of work for warehouses in the Virginia to Georgia region the last few years and this a small way I can give back to the communities that helped build our business.

CEO at Curbo Curbs

Amish community becomes part of Chimney Rock's comeback story

Apr 22, 2025

It’s been more than six months since Hurricane Helene swept through western North Carolina, leaving behind destruction and hardship. Few places were hit as hard as Chimney Rock Village, but now, signs of progress are everywhere. The recovery effort has been powered by an outpouring of support, with volunteers and donations helping to restore the beloved mountain town.

MY THOUGHTS:

Just like barn raising, the Amish are community minded people who work together to finish a task. In this case, they build 12 tiny home for those families affected by the disasters. I admire their kindness and generosity, thanks to their four core values.

17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. – I John 3 vs 17 to 18 (ESV)

Here are two cases of Amish Mutual Aid:

Mark Curtis, was baptized into an Amish church in Belle Center, Ohio, in 2003, after their care for his cancer-stricken mother convinced him to join.

The following is a true story of an Amish widow and her 5 kids in 2016:

A young Amish man named Steven Yoder was killed in a mill accident here in New Wilmington, Pa . Steven left behind a wife named Mary, and five children under the age of 13, and one on the way. I asked my Amish friend Teena what would happen to the family.

"How will they financially make it, since the Amish do not carry insurance?" Teena answered, "The church will take care of them." The church, in an Old World Order Amish group, is the entire community. "We are the church! We will all pitch in and help her until her sons are grown and can financially support her. If every body gives a little, she will have a lot "

Today, I stopped by Teena's and she asked me what the weather is supposed to be like on Saturday. I said it was going to be cool, but dry. Teena said, "Good, because at least ten teams of men are going to Mary's house to plow her fields, winterize her home and barn, get her a winters supply of coal (to heat her home) and wood (for her to cook with) . The women are all going to cook and bake to help feed the men, who are taking care of Mary's farm, and bring food for Mary to have enough all winter. I'm glad it will be nice for them."

This is community.

This is church.

When there is a need, it is taken care of. Not by a few, but by all.

Lord help us to be a better community and a better church.

Let our eyes see the needs. Let our ears hear the cries. Let our hands pitch in to do the dirty work. Many hands make light work.

We all need each other. ❤

Copied.

As a proponent of community, I like what the Amish do, helping one another even during disasters. I suspect that if there is an emergency like natural disasters or civil war, the Amish will know how to survive. I will close with these two quotes about dolphins and elephants, as these two mammal groups are community minded and work together in need.

"We do well to remember dolphins. If a dolphin fails, then others come alongside and nudge him gently through the waters; because a dolphin must keep moving in order to keep breathing. We all need our dolphins alongside us from time to time."

Elephants are highly family-oriented. They live in matriarchal societies where related females and their offspring form close-knit herds that stay together for life. These herds are led by the oldest and wisest female, the matriarch, who guides them to food and water and protects them from danger. Male elephants, on the other hand, leave their birth herds during adolescence and often form bonds with other males or join bachelor herds.

Very few burdens are heavy if everyone lifts. – Amish Proverb

We do not relegate the pulpit work, or the rest of the church’s teaching, to the lead pastor to handle as much as he can alone and then fill slots when he’s on vacation. We value plurality in teaching, and preaching, just as we value the plurality of elders in decision-making, oversight, and pastoral ministry throughout the week. We begin not by asking how the lead pastor can preach as much as possible, but by asking how we can most effectively teach and preach as a team of pastors.
