DAWDI HAUS FOR ELDERLY PARENTS

In Amish culture, the Dawdi Haus is usually a smaller home, attached to or near the main house, which the farmer moves into when he retires and sells the farm and main house to one of his children. A large Amish family may sometimes have two or three Dawdi homes where the parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents live and continue to participate as valuable members of the family.

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. – I Timothy 5:8 (ESV)

You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. – Leviticus 19:32 (ESV)

Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. – Job 12:12 (ESV)

Hear, O sons, a father's instruction,
and be attentive, that you may gain[a] insight,
for I give you good precepts;

    do not forsake my teaching.
When I was a son with my father,
tender, the only one in the sight of my mother,
he taught me and said to me,
“Let your heart hold fast my words;
    keep my commandments, and live.
Get wisdom; get insight;
do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.

– Proverbs 4:1-5 (ESV)

22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. 23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.– Proverbs 23:22-23 (ESV)

1 Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity. – I Timothy 5:1-2 (ESV)

If you happen to drive past an Amish farmhouse, you might notice a smaller house build next to the main one. That smaller home is called the Dawdi Haus, a Pennsylvanian Dutch word for ‘Grandpa House’. The farmer moves into when he retires and sells the farm and main house to one of his children. A large Amish family may sometimes have two or three Dawdi homes where the parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents live and continue to participate as valuable members of the family.

The smaller home built onto the main farmhouse, for grandparents to live in, is called a daudihaus.

I was taught in school and from the bible to honour your parents and never abandon them when they are old. When I think of the Dawdi Haus, I notice the Amish never tell their elderly parents to go and live in retirement communities but they let them stay with them, even in their own home, where it pass from generation to generation.

The Dawdi Haus has motivated me to take care of my elderly parents and care for them.

How Amish Stay Active in Old Age

Amish people don’t “retire” the way modern people do. They slow down, but they don’t stop moving.

Their secret is simple:

> They never stop using their bodies.

---

1️⃣Movement Is Part of Daily Life

Even in old age, Amish people:

Walk every day

Do light farm or house work

Garden, feed animals, carry small things

Stay busy in simple ways

They don’t exercise for one hour and rest all day.

They move a little all day long.

---

2️⃣They Work According to Their Strength

They:

Don’t lift heavy things anymore

Don’t rush

Don’t compete with young people

But they:

Still help

Still move

Still stay useful

This keeps the body active without breaking it.

---

3️⃣They Avoid Sitting All Day

They don’t have:

TV

Phones

Computers

So they:

Don’t sit for hours

Don’t stay inactive

Naturally stay more mobile

---

4️⃣Simple Food and Simple Routine

They:

Eat home-cooked food

Don’t overeat

Sleep on time

Wake up early

This keeps the body lighter and more energetic.

---

5️⃣Strong Family and Community Support

Old people are:

Respected

Included in daily life

Given small jobs and responsibilities

This keeps them:

Mentally active

Emotionally strong

And physically moving

---

🧠The Amish secret is:

> Don’t stop living. Just live slower.

That’s why many Amish people:

Keep walking and working into old age

Stay stronger longer

And remain independent much longer than most people

---

✍️Powerful line you can use:

> “They don’t retire from life. They just slow down.”

---

⚠️Note

> Everyone’s health is different. This is traditional lifestyle observation, not medical advice.

Very few burdens are heavy if everyone lifts. – Amish Proverb

We do not relegate the pulpit work, or the rest of the church’s teaching, to the lead pastor to handle as much as he can alone and then fill slots when he’s on vacation. We value plurality in teaching, and preaching, just as we value the plurality of elders in decision-making, oversight, and pastoral ministry throughout the week. We begin not by asking how the lead pastor can preach as much as possible, but by asking how we can most effectively teach and preach as a team of pastors.

Day 1 Moving Sunday School

Mar 1, 2023

This the detailed video of day 1 of moving the St Marks Sunday School from Bridport to Springfield. This building was used for a multitude of purposes, line and tap dancing, girl guides, cubs, brownies and a school library as well as a Sunday School. It was impressive to watch a team of professionals navigate the tight spaces to set up their gear and move the building without doing any damage. Part 2 will show how it travelled by road through Scottsdale, up Saliers Hill to its new home on the Amish family farm at Springfield.
